Hi, my name is Emily and I'm an advice seeker

If you know me, you know I am always asking questions and constantly talking about things that are on my mind. I'm always in search of knowledge and anything that will enrich me or those dearest to me. I'm a HUGE sucker for some good advice and it just so happens I found some pretty great pieces of it today while reading through a few things.
Did you know the best way to remember something is to share it? Guess that means you're the lucky recipient of some good advice today!
We'll call this list:
"Em's list of Advice to Inspire"

1. Perfection is the enemy of getting things done
2. Stay true to who you are. Don't be intimidated, don't be sweet talked.
3. Always leave a margin (whether it be in your checking account, a parking space, even with your daily life)
4. Start the way you intend to finish.
5. It's always more effective to be civil.
6. If you can't find a place to get involved, create one (the hubs is actually in the process of doing this right now. He's starting an Improv Troupe. Pretty proud of him)
7. The best way out is always through.
8. Remember that the days are long but the years are short.
9. Don't cry over anything that can't cry over you. (that piece of china you've had since your wedding that broke last week......)
10. If there's not a solution, there is not a problem.
11. Relax. Daily stressors seem like the end of the world, don't let them cloud what's important.
12. Follow your own advice (this is where I refer to #11)

I read something that my BFF Oprah wrote recently, it said "the right words at the right time can set you on a new path, open your eyes to something you hadn't considered, and make the road of life a little easier to navigate." I am a total believer in that, and the words above are definitely included in that quote.

Have a great day! Thanks for stopping by!

Brain things.

I don't have much to say.
Actually, I have SO MUCH to say...that I have no clue what to say.
You know how that goes, right?
......right?

My mind is swirling with thoughts. And not many of them are related. Or maybe they are...and after I list them here I'll see the connection?
  1. We want to sell our house but are worried we won't make enough to even break even so we're just starting the process of talking to a few different realtors to figure it all out.
  2. I want to enroll the crazy boys in a parent nursery school (it's a co-op type of thing and it's ah-maze-ing) but I'm struggling with myself over it because it costs a bit of money and I am such a frugal person.
  3. My dear sweat Elliot, who is 4, has decided talking back and even yelling "no!" at me sometimes is part of his life now. I wasn't expecting this to be a part of my life for some reason.
  4. The hubs and I are in charge of some fun entertainment at a church activity this weekend and while everything is planned for, there are still a few loose ends that need to be wrapped up.
  5.  On top of all that, I was told last week that I'm having some heart problems. Totally 100% unexpected. I'm trying to figure out how all that works now and have to get more tests tomorrow.
So......after writing that down and re-reading it 17.4 times, I think I know what the deal is. I'm pretty anxious and apprehensive about #5 (who wouldn't be?! Hearts are kind of important!) so I'm trying to occupy my time with anything else. Maybe? Well, either way.....that's what's happening in my brain today.

You know what? I would LOVE it if you have experience with any of the above things and you felt like you wanted to share your thoughts with me. For reals. I would love it.

To top off this  craziness, I saw this last night and I thought it totally 1 million percent pertained to me. So, I'm sharing cause I'm cool like that:

Thanks for stopping by! Don't forget to tell me all of your deep thoughts about my crazy brain!

Playing catch up. or road tripping. or deep thoughts

Seriously, it's August?
This means it is going to be 110 degrees at my house today.
This also means the little crazy people we like to call "our boys" around here will be inside this afternoon because it's too.dang.hot. to be outside. Unless they're swimming.

So, I was thinking about all of the things I should have been writing about these past couple weeks, but somehow I've been remiss in my blogging. I've started working out hard core {4 inches gone off my hips and waist, boo-yah!}, I've begun learning how to meditate {amazing stuff} and we've gone on a road trip {14 hours each way. I am superwoman}. I was stressing {apparently one of my favorite past times} about how to fit all of this in on my blog and make it fun and interesting and readable and all that stuff when I had this thought:

It's not about playing catch-up.

Deep right?!?!?!
Well, I thought it was.

So, instead of playing catch-up with you, I'll just share some of my favorite pictures from our trip.
{What's this trip I speak of? Driving from central California to Washington to visit beloved friends and family. We left on a Monday morning at 2am, arrived on a Tuesday afternoon around 1pm and drove back that Friday night at 10pm, arriving the very next day...which was Saturday if you're able to keep up with my ramblings, at 1pm. Long trip. Great trip. Loved it. Would take a road trip with my crazy family again any day}

I LOVE this! The classic "let's try to take a cute picture.....but wait! a duck!!"

Once again, love this. There was no duck involved in these pictures though.

This picture just says "joy" to me

Saw this iconic sign, grabbed hubs by the shoulder and said: "look! Grey's Anatomy!" Ridiculous, I know.

On our way to the zoo. Elliot is holding hands with his cousin Chloe while she sits in her stroller. So adorable..

Camel Ride!!

Happy happy happy.
So, there's the extent of my catch-up.
And I'll leave you with this very pertinent thought:

"In rivers, that which you touch is the last of what has passed and the first of that which comes. So it is with present time."
—Leonardo da Vinci

Thanks for stopping by!!!!!! I love your comments!!

My best me promise

The hubs came home from work one day with a bag full of random things that said "My best ME promise." If I remember correctly, ME is supposed to stand for something....I just don't remember what that was.....

Anyway, one of the things in the bag was a magnetic frame, so obviously I stuck it on my fridge and it frames a silly picture that was taken of me and the hubs when I was pregnant with our #2 not-so-little man.

I don't know why, but this morning I was walking around thinking to myself "what is my best me promise?"

I've decided, the best thing I can promise myself is to not put pressure on myself. I am my own worst critic and I pressure myself way to much to do things better/faster/stronger/whatever. While looking through some new blogs this morning, I found this quote:

"A Pint can't hold a quart-if it holds a pint it is doing all that can be expected of it."
--Margaret Deland

Isn't that a great quote! (Thanks to this blog for the quote!)

My best me promise? Less pressure, more love.
The end.

How about you?

Don't forget, the My Memories giveaway ends tomorrow! Go comment on the post for a chance to win!

War Dogs

I love dogs.
Seriously, I love them.
(You can meet my dog, Sam the Corgi, here)

Today on my MSN homepage, there was a story about War Dogs and a really interesting picture of a dog and his (Army)Owner jumping out of a helicopter. I had to read the article, mainly for the pictures (FYI, I only like cookbooks with pictures, I know you wanted to know that). I was half expecting to read about horrible accidents and inhumane treatment of these brave dogs and I was pleasantly surprised. The article spoke about the strong bond between dog and owner, the safety precautions that are taken with the dogs and how they are treated like members of the organization they serve and not just equipment that can be left behind.

source
I'm the type of person who feels more sorry for the animals that die or get hurt in movies than the people (I know, it's horrible......but I'm trying to be honest here!) so my first thoughts about these awesome dogs are: is this really a safe and humane thing to be doing? Should we really be sending dogs out to war? But the reality is this: we send men and women out to war, it's not safe or even really humane for them either, but they go. And really, when I think about it a bit more, I bet these dogs are having a blast. They have a job to do, and in my experience, a dog with a job is a happy dog.

Anyways, I just wanted to share the pictures and article with you in case you haven't seen it, you can read it here.

What do you think about dogs in war?
You know me, I love to hear your thoughts =)

Deep Thought Tuesday (and a birthday!)

First off, Happy Birthday to my little man Caleb! He is officially 1 today! We've been celebrating in various forms since Saturday but today, he's official :)

This last year has flown by so so fast. Literally, warp speed. Yesterday I was talking with the hubs about the future and I had to stop myself.....because most of the time I talk about the future. It's always: "I wonder what it's going to be like when the boys are teenagers?" "Do you think we'll make more money by then?" "Can we go on a really big vacation someday?" "Can you imagine how weird it's going to be to not have children in the house anymore?!" etc etc etc.

When I start talking like this, the hubs gets a little on the quite side (read: moody). He is definitely more of a "present" minded person.....while I, well, I think you know what I am. Though I am learning, focusing on the future all the time isn't really a good idea. I mean, it's good to have goals. It's good to strive for something. But if we're constantly thinking about the future, the present turns into the past......right?

I mean, look how fast this last year has gone by for us. A year ago at this time I was huge and hungry and sitting in a hospital bed getting hooked up to an IV and getting prepped for my 2nd c-section. Now here we are....a year later.....and that little boy who was born a year ago isn't so little anymore, and he's just going to get bigger and bigger....oh wait, that's the future.

I heard someone say once that thinking in the past creates emotions of guilt or the thought "I wish...." and thinking in the future creates emotions of anxiety or the thought "what if...." so living in the present is really the only thing that really REALLY makes sense.

If you stop and really think about that, it's totally true. Like, for reals.

I'd like to leave you with this quote by Abraham Lincoln:

The best thing about the future
is that it comes
only one day
at a time.

I'm really grateful it comes one day at a time, cause those days are precious and awesome and perfect.

Are "smartphones" really smart? {smart is a funny word}

I've had issues for awhile now with the amount of time spent on "smartphones." Whether it be the person sitting in the passenger seat in the car who never looks up from their phone the entire drive or the person sitting at the table while we're out to eat who is constantly looking at their phone or the always fun person who texts (or worse, checks facebook) in the middle of your conversation, it just bugs me.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not exempt from all of these, I have an iPhone too....and I resisted for a very long time for the above reasons (plus some). But now I've found myself constantly checking my phone for emails or text messages or to see which one of my friends is doing what on facebook. It's horrible, absolutely horrible. I'm so so close to giving up the phone in favor for a cheaper one (if only I could find one that takes good pictures!).

It just so happens I read an article about this exact thing this morning. It compared the constant checking of phones to constant snacking. Good analogy right? The author talks about how her family went on a weekend trip and the whole way there, all 5 of them were texting, tweeting, connecting with everyone else except the people in the car. When they got to their destination they all panicked when they realized there was no cell service. She says, "the uncomfortable feeling that we were missing out on something important overtook our intentions to enjoy downtime together."

"In our culture, we are measured by the value of our network," says Genevieve Bell, a cultural anthropologist, "a cell phone is a leash, tethering us to that network." Dropping the leash is good for the soul though. I mean, think about religions. Every major religion has some sort of built-in break, Sundays or Saturdays.....a few hours a week, a week each year....something set aside to drop everything else and focus on one thing, God. Couldn't we all do this with our phones, put them down and focus on what's more important? What's going on around us?

This is where the excuses come in though, and the most popular one (around my house anyway) "I use my phone for work purposes, people need to get a hold of me." The author has a really great suggestion to deal with that one: "Use your facebook status or e-mail vacation responder to announce that you are offline. Managing other people's expectations (meaning that they should not expect to hear from you instantly) can give you a guilt-free breather."

The cultural anthropologist I mentioned earlier, Genevieve Bell, makes a really good point though: all of this stuff is relatively new. There was a time in our culture where people argued about whether we should watch TV during dinner and overtime, people figured it out. She mentions 2 different trips she has taken to the UK, one 7 years ago where everyone at the table had a phone and it was in the middle of the table and the moment it rang it was answered. The second trip came 2 years later where the phones were pocketed and turned off during dinner. She says that once the initial excitement wears off, common sense and etiquette kick in but that we are still in the process of hammering out the rules.

So, maybe all my pet-peeves about people and their smartphone usage will eventually go away? Maybe common sense will kick in and people will realize what's more important is what's in front of them and around them instead of what's in their hand......or maybe it won't and maybe none of this will change.

I think being aware of it is the first step......I know my habits will change.......

Sorry for the long wordy post....deep thoughts will do that to you =)

Do you have any thoughts on smartphones and how they have changed our lives? You are totally welcome to share!
