Mindful Eating? What's that?!

So I went to see a nutritionist the other day and I took a food log with me so she could see what I eat. As she was looking over the food log she asked me: "Looking at this, I can see a couple things that we should change. Do you know what they are?" and I said (in all my wisdom): "I snack too much and I eat too much after dinner." You know what she said? She said "You're right." (Surprise!)

She then proceeded to tell me that I eat a lot of "kid" snack foods. Since when are Cheez-its and Oreo's and graham crackers strictly for kids?! Either way, apparently I should be eating more "grown up" snacks. "Grown up" snacks in my book are boring....I mean, who wants to snack on nutritious stuff? Doesn't that defeat the point of snacking? For some reason, I've always viewed "snack time" more like "reward time" (whoa! huge epiphany right there, I've never really thought about that!) but really "snack time" should be about refueling my body so I'm ready for the next round of crazy-boy-wrestling-match.

So, the last 2 days have been chalk full of mindful eating...something I've never been good at. I found myself actually scared to eat yesterday because I wanted to make sure whatever I ate had the good stuff in it to keep me full and happy for a good long while and that it was more like fuel instead of whatever else I've been eating the last 29 years.

Anyways, I want some ideas people. What kind of snacks do you eat? Help a sister out.

  2. I love almond butter. By itself, with an apple, or sometimes chocolate chips (dark chocolate of course. Very dark!). If you can get the kind straight from the grinding machine it's even better. I always get it at Winco. BBQ Popchips are also pretty awesome, although I get the little bags because I have a hard time controlling myself with the large bag and will eat the whole thing.

  3. Ooh! Thanks Laura! I have never tried almond butter, I'm definitely going to try it....especially if there is dark chocolate involved!
